Description

This specimen of Quercus ilex, known as an exceptional holm oak, is considered possibly the largest and oldest of its kind in the world. It reaches a height of 16 meters and a trunk diameter of 7.8 meters, dimensions that, along with its imposing presence, make it a true natural monument. It is estimated to be about 1200 years old, which further enhances its ecological, historical, and symbolic value. This holm oak is, with great probability, the oldest and largest in Spain, and when talking about holm oaks, that is practically equivalent to saying in the world. Its surroundings have witnessed the passage of the knights of the Military Order of Santiago, who rode through these paths during the Reconquista in the 13th century, thus adding an important historical component to the place. It is located on the Camino Real, within the area of Cordel de la Cumbre, a zone of great natural wealth. In its vicinity, it is possible to observe various bird species, such as the booted eagle and the red kite, along with others typical of the dehesa ecosystem, such as the hoopoe and the azure-winged magpie. Additionally, the environment offers an interesting display of native flora, among which the white rockrose and daffodils stand out. Access to the holm oak is easy and comfortable, as the path is flat and without slopes, and it takes approximately 20 minutes on foot, making it an easy hiking route, ideal for all audiences.
